Aless · The Human Touch › How it works
One for each kind of work. Not one that knows a little about everything.
It sits in your building. No internet.
Built by people who do that work. No field is entered any other way.
A small rack, not a datacentre — and the answers are ready in advance, so you are not paying every time somebody asks.
Five levels
Press a level to see what it is.
What most AI actually is: a general model answering from whatever it read during training. Fluent, plausible, and with no way for you to check it. It has never seen your records and does not know your rules.
No figure exists without a record behind it. Open any number and you get the workings: the source record, the rule applied, the table it came from, the log entry that wrote it. A figure that cannot be traced is refused, not invented.
Every action is written to a log that cannot be edited.
It explains the why, not only the how much — connecting things a calculator cannot. The sums themselves are done by tested, checkable code rather than guessed at, so the working is shown rather than asserted.
Not the theory. Any AI can read the textbook. What it cannot read is what a person learns from doing the work for thirty years.
So we go and get it. We sit with doctors, teachers and bankers and interview them — how they actually decide, not how the manual says to. The real examples. The nuances. The exception that only shows up twice a decade and that a veteran spots instantly. What they distrust and why. What they would do next.
That is captured, kept, and injected into Aless — and it is what turns a language model into a genuinely specialised one.
Injected rather than trained in, so it stays inspectable and removable. This is the part that took decades of somebody’s life, and it is the part nobody can copy.
Why. Everything above only holds if nobody outside can reach it. An AI that reasons over a whole institution is the most concentrated target that institution has. So the last level is not a feature of the AI — it is the system it sits inside.
What airgapped means. No wifi. No outside ethernet. Not a firewall and not a policy — there is no wire.
How. One hardware data diode sits between you and it: data can travel in and results can travel out, but nothing can travel back the other way. That is how the hardware is built, not a setting someone can change — so there is no way back in for anyone to use. Both directions are recorded in the log inside.
Encryption. AES-256 from the moment your data is cleaned, and again before results are stored, on a machine that does nothing else. Aless works on tokens rather than real values, so it could not disclose a figure even if it were told to.
Keys. The design puts the keys in hardware security modules — YubiHSM 2, FIPS 140-3 — two per protected machine, so keys live in hardware and never in a file. Designed and specified; the units are not yet purchased. We would rather say that than badge hardware nobody owns.
Written down, inside. A log at the rack records everything, including the diode monitoring, and it cannot be edited. Reading it means standing in the room. What leaves is pure data — text and numbers, never code.
SLM
Everyone reads SLM as Small Language Model. The only small thing about Aless is what it costs to run and to keep running. It is not small in what it knows.
The S that matters is Specialized. And what specialises it is not more data. It is people — the doctors, teachers and bankers whose working judgement was interviewed out of them and built in. A field is only entered once practitioners are at the table: at least twenty-five years in that field, paid properly for their time.
That is the human touch. Not a warmer tone of voice. Banking was built with people who spent their working lives inside large banks, across several countries. Still in the room.
